Rant Section

Post  xtrocious on Thu Jan 06, 2011 2:47 am

Just thought I also start a ranting section...

A place for us to rant and get stuff off our chest - apparently it's a good destresser hahah

Anyway, here's what sparked me off this morning...

In today's "Mind Your Body" supplement, there was an article on Protein Shake Craze...

While I do not believe in protein shakes (why not just eat a nice juicy steak or siew bak?), some comments from the so-called nutrition "experts" had me shaking my head in disbelief...

According to one Ms Jaclyn Reutens (Aptima Nutrition And Sports Consultants clinical dietian), she warns that protein shakes should not be confused with meal replacements or used as weight loss diets...

"A weight-loss meal needs to comprise of carbohydrates, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals."

The article then went on to quote one Derrick Ong who runs his own consultancy Eat Right (what a joke) as saying that taking more than 2g of protein per kg of bodyweight a day may lead to the excess being oxidised and stored as fat...

Another big shake of the head and a face palm moment...sigh

I know but what I can't stand is all these so-called "experts" continuing to mislead the gullible...sigh

And of course it doesn't help when our esteemed media parrots these untruths without even bothering to check if they are correct or not...

Re: Rant Section

Post  chickenbackside on Thu Jan 06, 2011 10:57 am

Just took my mom for her checkup and her doctor scolded me when he found out I told my mom to take 5000IU of vitamin D3 everyday.

Me: What's wrong with supplementing with 5000IU of D3 everyday?

Doc: It's too much! Her kidneys will not be able to take it! 1000IU is max!

Me: What is the optimal 25 hydroxy D level for healthy humans?

Doc: Huh?

Me: What is the optimal level of vitamin D for human beings?

Doc: I'm not sure.

Me: It is 60-80ng/ml according to Professor Michael Holick at Boston University.

Doc: Whatever it is, 5000IU is too much.

Me: I'm sorry but what is your basis for saying that 5000IU a day is too much for my mom? Did you test her 25 hyrdoxy D level?

Doc: No.

Me: Then how did you arrive at the conclusion that 5000IU is too much? I did a 25 hydroxy D test for my mom at SGH and her reading was 18ng/ml. She is literally severely vitamin D deficient.

Doc: Who is this professor? What qualifications does he have?

At this point, I whipped out my iPad and googled Prof Holick, came up is 3 secs, and I read to the doc:

MICHAEL HOLICK PhD MDProfessor of Medicine, Physiology, and Biophysics
Director, General Clinical Research Center
Director, Vitamin D, Skin, and Bone Research Laboratory
Director, Biologic Effects of Light Research Center
Boston University Medical Center

PubMed: Holick MFIn 2006, Dr. Holick received the 18th Annual Award for Excellence in Clinical Research for his pioneering contributions in the basic science of vitamin D.

In 2007 he received the Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award, given for research that is changing the thinking about a biomedical problem. On 15 May 2009 Dr. Holick received the Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research.

In October 2009 Dr. Holick received the 2009 NAMS/Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. Vitamin D Research Award from the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) for research that has advanced the understanding of the role of vitamin D for peri- and postmenopausal women.

Doc: Hmm.

Me: I don't understand why 5000IU of D3 a day is dangerous when 1/2 hour in the sun yields 30-40,000 IU of vitamin D.

Doc: Are you sure it's so much?

Me: Yes I am. Are you?

Doc changes subject at this point...

SIGH....

I won't use the word complacent...

A lot of times, it borders nearer to ignorance...sigh

Anyway, I wonder if anyone else saw the Sunday Times Hot Bod section - they featured a doctor who's on the Atkins Diet - I don't mind go to him for my future consultations...hahah

I am quite sure it will save me a lot of aggravation Laughing

If you do look him up, please share the contact. I agree, it will be a whole lot easier. Firstly, he would probably be much less ignorant compared with low-fat-low-cholesterol docs. Secondly, there would be a lot less "teaching" involved, as in teaching the doc, haha...

I am trying - I think I misplaced my Sunday Times...

Anyway else got a copy of 2 Jan Sunday Times?

Just give me the name I will google for him...hahah

Then again, if he's purely on Atkins, do you think he will frown on high fats?

Well, if he is indeed doing or advocating a proper Atkins approach, then he should not be against high fat, especially good fats.

The real problem with doctors is, even after you present them facts or challenge their dogmas with science, they don't get motivated to get to the bottom of things. They never question or maybe are afraid to do so in fear of being ousted by their peers.

It's fine if someone's profession is a driver or something, where choosing a longer route won't really harm anyone. But doctors are looked upon as people who have answers to everything pertaining to health. They are trusted by most people without question.

It seems like the medical profession has a free pass to ignore science and evidence. Shouldn't the first person who died of a heart attack despite taking Lipitor and having very low cholesterol levels spark some kind of inquiry? The Framingham study that tracks hundreds of thousands of people found that people who died of heart attacks have lower cholesterol than people who didn't. And it's not the only study that found this correlation.

But is there any change in the approach?

The system is deeply flawed. Doctors are "educated" on the latest research that is funded by super rich drug companies. They never read the research carefully, they don't question the methods of the research, they don't investigate to see if there is any conflict of interest...

Yeah bro. They don't dig into anything to find the answer, they are complacent in a sense they're happy with how things are, so long as it doesn't effect their livelyhood, they don't really care.
